Last week, we took part in the Hestia Hackathon in Barcelona, a gathering focused on enhancing data interoperability for agricultural sustainability.

This hackathon marked a significant advancement for the Hestia project, an initiative by Oxford University that we are proud to support. Hestia is dedicated to setting a global standard for agricultural sustainability, evaluating the entire environmental impact of farming—from GHG emissions to biodiversity loss, deforestation, water pollution, and pesticide toxicity. The ultimate goal is to assign a sustainability score to every food product, similar to the Nutri-Score for nutritional content.

The hackathon focused on integrating diverse data into the Hestia platform, showcasing organizations’ transition from proprietary formats to the unified Hestia schema. This crucial move toward data interoperability allows for comparing various agricultural practices and tools.

Notably, teams from CoolFarm Tool and Farm Carbon Calculator are creating converters to sync their data formats with the Hestia model, facilitating data import, export, and comparison for hundreds of commercial farms. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture, FiBL is also working on uploading their research data to Hestia.

At LoginEKO, we successfully completed our data integration into Hestia platform, which we showcased at the event. We plan to implement environmental scores across all our farming operations and share them transparently on our crops’ traceability reports.

By participating in events like the Hestia Hackathon, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in sustainable agriculture, ensuring that we not only adapt to global standards but help define them.
